A day out in the Combe de Savoie, starting from the campsite
You don’t need to drive far here: everything listed below is no more than 20 minutes away.
First, Miolans Castle, perched high above Saint-Pierre-d’Albigny: its ramparts overlook the entire valley.
Next, enjoy a picnic by lac de Carouge, just a stone’s throw from your pitch.
Then a cycle ride along the V62 cycle route, alongside the River Isère, or a wine tasting at a wine cellar in Cruet, Arbin or Fréterive.
Finally, a glass of local wine at the campsite, followed by a bite to eat and the summer entertainment.
Combe de Savoie: the sun-drenched valley in the Isère
Combe de Savoie is the Isère valley between Montmélian and Albertville. On its right bank, the Bauges massif offers sun-drenched slopes. Saint-Pierre-d’Albigny, where the campsite is located, lies at the foot of these slopes, beneath the Dent d’Arclusaz.
Thanks to this exposure, the vineyards stretch up the slopes of the Bauges, from Chignin to Fréterive. And for a leisurely ride through the valley, the V62 cycle route passes right by the campsite entrance.
Miolans Castle, the former prison of the Dukes of Savoy
Perched on a rocky outcrop above Saint-Pierre-d’Albigny, Miolans Castle overlooks the entire Combe valley. Originally the residence of the Barons of Miolans, it later became one of the most feared prisons in the States of Savoy. Its most famous prisoner, the Marquis de Sade, escaped from there in 1773. The château is open to visitors during the season: opening times and admission prices can be found on its website.
The wines of the Combe de Savoie
On these stony slopes, the main varieties grown are Jacquère – the most widely planted white grape variety in Savoie – and Mondeuse, the region’s iconic red. Several Savoie wine appellations are, in fact, named after villages in La Combe: Arbin and Saint-Jean-de-la-Porte for Mondeuse, Cruet and Montmélian for Jacquère, and Chignin for Bergeron.
Here at the campsite, we love introducing you to the wines produced by local winegrowers. If you’d like to explore further, there are plenty of wine cellars open for tastings.
The Vine and Wine Museum in Montmélian
Just 12 minutes from the campsite, Montmélian is home to the Savoie Vine and Wine Museum, which showcases the history of the vineyards, the tools used and the techniques of the winegrowers. It is open from Tuesday to Saturday, and admission is free for under-18s. Above the town, the rock on which the old citadel once stood – razed to the ground on the orders of Louis XIV in 1706 – offers a beautiful view of the valley.
The Village Museum and Lake Saint-André
Just 12 minutes away, in Grésy-sur-Isère, the Combe de Savoie Village Museum brings the Savoie of yesteryear to life: around twenty buildings, thousands of artefacts and a 350-metre covered walkway, ideal for rainy weather. In July and August, it is open every day from 10.00 am to 6.30 pm.
As for the natural surroundings, Lake Saint-André, surrounded by vineyards, is 20 minutes away. It lies on the Tour des Bauges cycle route, which includes a stop at Lakelac de Carouge.
