Albertville, a town of sport and history in Savoie.
Albertville, the sub-prefecture of Savoie, is 23 km from the campsite. Today’s town is the legacy of several centuries of history. The town developed in stages, as the history of France and Savoie unfolded.
Albertville’s origins lie in Conflans, the citadel. The strategic position of this fortress, at the crossroads of the various valleys of the Alps that meet at this point. As a result, it played a key defensive and economic role from the early Middle Ages onwards. For many years, the town of Conflans hosted markets and fairs attended by up to 1,500 people.
The Roman road linking Milan to Lyon and Vienne encouraged trade between the products of the plains and those of the mountains. Over time, the town continued to grow and the citadel expanded to its current size. The town became part of France, and therefore part of Savoie, in 1860.
Continued development of this Alpine town over time
The development of industry and then tourism, thanks first and foremost to winter sports, changed the town’s destiny. Its privileged location around the major valleys of the Tarentaise, Maurienne and Bauges massifs made it an important crossroads in the Alps. This development and location led Albertville to bid to host the XVI Olympic Winter Games in 1992.
The Games enabled the town to develop even further. Major Olympic infrastructures such as the Olympic Hall and Park were built on the outskirts.
