A day out in Aix-les-Bains from the campsite
A 40-minute drive takes you to the heart of the spa town. Here’s a typical day.
First, a stroll through the town centre, from the Arch of Campanus to the Temple of Diana. Then, a walk past the Grand Cercle Casino and its theatre.
Then lunch in town, or a picnic on the esplanade by Lake Bourget.
A relaxing afternoon at the Aqua-détente area of the Chevalley thermal baths, or a swim at Aqualac with the children.
Finally, back to the peace and quiet of the campsite: one last dip in the pool, the snack bar, and the summer entertainment.
Aix-les-Bains, a spa town since ancient times
As early as the 1st century, the Romans called the town Aquae, meaning ‘the Waters’. They were already making use of its hot springs. Much later, the royal thermal baths were opened in 1783, under King Victor Amadeus III.
The Belle Époque of spa-goers
In the 19th century, Aix-les-Bains became a fashionable spa resort. The Grand Cercle casino was opened in 1850, and an Italian-style theatre was added in 1899. Queen Victoria even stayed there on three occasions, in 1885, 1887 and 1890.
Originally Savoyard, then French in 1860

What to see in the centre of Aix-les-Bains
The town centre is easy to explore on foot. In front of the ancient thermal baths stands the 9-metre-high Arch of Campanus, which dates from Roman times. Right next to it is the temple known as the Temple of Diana, which has been a listed historic monument since 1875.
As for the former national thermal baths, they are no longer open to the public: they are currently being converted into flats and shops. However, their façade remains visible from the square.
The Grand Cercle Casino and its Mosaic Room
The Grand Cercle is the former palace of Savoy. Its theatre and its gilded mosaics, by Antonio Salviati, have been listed as a historic monument since 2013. In addition, the tourist office organises a number of guided tours there in the autumn.
The Faure Museum is set to reopen soon
The Faure Museum houses works by Corot, Cézanne, Degas and Pissarro, as well as 34 sculptures by Rodin. It is currently closed, but is due to reopen in early 2027 under the name La Villa-Collection d’art.
Spas and relaxation in Aix-les-Bains
Aix-les-Bains remains a major spa resort. The Chevalley thermal baths treat rheumatic and phlebological conditions, whilst the Marlioz thermal baths specialise in respiratory conditions.
No prescription is required to visit the Aqua-détente area at the Chevalley thermal baths, which is open to everyone every day from 10.00 am to 7.00 pm. It features two thermal pools at 34 °C, saunas, steam rooms and a solarium. Admission will cost around €25 in 2026.
For families with children, the Aqualac aquatic centre, situated by the lake, offers swimming pools, a water slide and a paddling pool. Finally, every July, the Musilac festival brings the lakeside esplanade to life.
