Lake Bourget, the largest glacial lake in France
Lake Bourget, which is 18 km long and 145 m deep, was formed at the end of the last ice age. It is also the deepest lake situated entirely within France. On its western shore, the Dent du Chat plunges straight into the water; to the east, Aix-les-Bains stretches out opposite Le Revard.
In summer, the water can reach 26 °C, and lifeguards are on duty during the season, both at Le Bourget-du-Lac and at Aix-les-Bains.
Le Bourget-du-Lac and the south bank
In Bourget-du-Lac, the priory and its garden, along with the ruins of an 11th-century castle, serve as a reminder of the village’s past. Just above, the Roc de Cornillon via ferrata offers a bird’s-eye view of the lake.
Hautecombe and Chanaz Abbey
On the west bank, Hautecombe Abbey was founded in the 12th century. Serving as the burial place for the counts and dukes of Savoy, it was remodelled in the 19th century in the Troubadour Gothic style and can be visited with an audio guide. The best way to get there is by boat from Aix-les-Bains.
To the north, the Savières Canal links the lake to the Rhône for around 4 km. It runs through Chanaz, the ‘little Venice of Savoy’, with its footbridge, old houses and a mill that still produces walnut oil using its 19th-century machinery.

Boating on the lake
Departing from Aix-les-Bains, these sightseeing cruises take you to Hautecombe Abbey, with a stop-off, or along the Savières Canal. A relaxing way to explore the lake from the water.
A cycle ride round Lake Bourget
Around 50 km, with a slight climb near the Col du Chat: the walk around the lake takes you through the vineyards of Chautagne, the woods and the beaches.
And to see the lake from above, the Revard viewpoint, in the Bauges massif, offers one of the finest views of the lake in its entirety.
