Next, have lunch on the terrace on Place Saint-Léger, the large pedestrianised square in the town centre.
Then there’s the cathedral with its trompe-l’œil murals, or Les Charmettes, the home of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. On a fine day, Lake Bourget is just a quarter of an hour’s drive from Chambéry.
Finally, back to the peace and quiet of the campsite: one last dip in the pool, the snack bar, and the summer entertainment.
Chambéry, the historic capital of Savoy
From the 13th century until 1563, Chambéry was the capital of the Counts, and later the Dukes, of Savoy, before the court moved to Turin. Savoy did not become part of France until 1860. As a legacy of this history, the town boasts a well-preserved historic centre and holds the ‘Ville d’art et d’histoire’ designation. To help you plan your visit, the Chambéry Montagnes tourist office website provides opening times and details of current guided tours.
The Dukes’ Castle and the Sainte-Chapelle
The castle overlooks the old town. It now houses the prefecture and the departmental council, but part of it is open to visitors via the tourist office, including the Sainte-Chapelle. It was here that the Holy Shroud was kept from 1502 to 1578, before it was taken to Turin.
The grand carillon and its 70 bells
In the Yolande Tower, right next to the Sainte-Chapelle, the grand carillon has 70 bells: it is the largest in France. You don’t need to go up to hear it. In summer, it plays for free every Saturday at 11 am, and you can hear it very clearly from the Place du Château.
Strolling through old Chambéry
You enter the old town via the Elephant Fountain, erected in 1838 in honour of General de Boigne. The people of Chambéry call it ‘the four bare-arses’: take a closer look – the elephants only have their front halves. From there, Rue de Boigne and its arcades lead straight to the castle.
In between, slip through the arcades. These covered passageways run between the buildings from one street to the next. Several of them lead out onto Place Saint-Léger, with its colourful façades and terraces.

The cathedral and its trompe-l’œil
From the outside, Saint-François-de-Sales Cathedral is unassuming. Inside, however, the walls and vaults are entirely covered in trompe-l’œil paintings, covering an area of 6,000 m². Created in 1834 by Casimir Vicario, it is said to be the largest collection of its kind in Europe.
Two specialities to take home
The chocolate truffle is said to have originated in Chambéry in the late 19th century, and the city’s chocolatiers still make them today. As for Chambéry vermouth, it has been produced here since the early 19th century: best enjoyed in moderation as an aperitif.
Les Charmettes and the museums, even on rainy days
Chambéry is also a great place to visit when the sky is overcast. Up on the hillside, Les Charmettes is the house where Jean-Jacques Rousseau lived from 1736 to 1742 with Madame de Warens. From April to October, it is open to visitors free of charge from Tuesday to Sunday, and the garden remains open all year round.
In the town centre, the fully refurbished Musée Savoisien tells the story of Savoie. The Musée des Beaux-Arts, for its part, displays a fine collection of Italian paintings. For families with children, the Galerie Eurêka offers hands-on science exhibitions where visitors can touch and explore the exhibits.
And if the sun comes out again, Lake Bourget is just a quarter of an hour from the city, whilst the Nivolet Cross watches over Chambéry from the Bauges massif.
