Walks, fishing and picnics by the water’s edge. What’s more, the ground is completely flat.

A day out in the Bauges, starting from the campsite
The mountain range begins just above the campsite: the Col du Frêne is 25 minutes away.
First, the Col du Frêne, by bike or by car, then the descent to Le Châtelard, in the heart of the massif.
Next, a picnic by the banks of the Chéran, or a plate of Tome des Bauges cheese in a village.
Then there’s the dairy in Aillon-le-Jeune, where you can find out all about Tome des Bauges cheese, or take a walk to the alpine chalets.
Finally, back to the campsite via the pass: a swim in the lake or the swimming pool, followed by a bite to eat and entertainment in the summer.
The Bauges Massif, a UNESCO Global Geopark
Situated between Chambéry, Annecy and Albertville, the Bauges massif has been a regional nature park since 1995. In 2011, it became France’s third UNESCO Global Geopark, recognised for its folded limestone landscapes, cliffs and gorges. The Bauges Park website lists the walking trails and places of interest to explore.
Just above the campsite, the Dent d’Arclusaz is a fine example of this: it is a perched syncline, a fold in the landscape that has remained elevated between two rocky ridges.
Chamois and alpine chalets
The heart of the mountain range is home to a large wildlife population, including over a thousand chamois. In summer, the herds make their way up to the mountain pastures, and it is their milk that is used to make Tome des Bauges cheese.
The Bauges Massif and Tamié Abbey
Tome des Bauges is an AOP cheese made from raw cow’s milk, produced in the mountain dairies of the massif. In Aillon-le-Jeune, 45 minutes away, the ‘Secrets de Fruitière’ visitor centre tells its story, and visitors can watch the cheese being moulded in the morning.
Near Albertville, Tamié Abbey, founded in 1132, is still home to a community of monks. They produce ‘tamié’, a cheese available from the abbey shop, and a free 20-minute film gives an insight into monastic life.

Villages and viewpoints
In La Compôte, 30 minutes away, the wooden barns and their balconies, supported by curved beams, offer a glimpse into the farming life of days gone by. In Le Revard, 55 minutes away, footbridges suspended over the abyss offer views of Lake Bourget and, on a clear day, of Mont Blanc.
Hiking and cycling in the Bauges
Starting from the campsite, the Col du Frêne, at an altitude of 950 metres, is the gateway to the massif for cyclists. The Tour des Bauges cycle route, meanwhile, includes a stop at lac de Carouge.
On foot, the trails lead off in all directions, from family walks to peaks such as the Arclusaz. Near Bellecombe-en-Bauges, 40 minutes away, the Pont du Diable spans a narrow, deep gorge.
